Recording Cousins Marrying?
« on: Monday 18 August 14 14:21 BST (UK) »
Hi

I was wondering if anyone could help with my query.  I'm trying to work out how to record within your family tree a marriage between cousins?

The individuals are listed in my family tree program as the children of their respective parents but can I then link the 2 individuals through a marriage so that the family connection is shown?  ie that they are cousins.  Or do I need to enter their marriage spouses separately?

I've not had to record this type of marriage before and have kept putting it to one side hoping the answer would come to me but it hasn't so am hoping someone on here might have the answer for me?

Thanks in advance for reading

If you were building your Tree using the software on Ancestry, there is a "merge individuals" feature.

Hi William

Many thank for the reply.

I am using Ancestry to build my tree, to clarify would I still need to enter the spouse as a new individual and then merge them to the cousins record?

Thanks again for your help

Starting from, say, the bride's profile page, you select Add A Fact, Marriage, the system will prompt "add a spouse" and there you'll have an option to add a completely new person - which you don't want to do - or select someone who's already in your tree - which you do want to do.

I think ;)

Hi STG

Thanks for your reply.

I shall give that a go, i thought there had to be a way around it otherwise I would end up with duplicate information in for these people.

Thanks

When you have added the name, underneath where it says "Edit this person" you will see on the extreme right "More options".Click on this then it gives you the option to Merge with duplicate.Until I seen this on Ancestry I had three instances of first cousins marrying.I had left them as apparently unrelated but now I used the merge option and added a note confirming that they were first cousins.

My grandparents are 1st cousins,so my tree looks a little odd.
My great grandparents are the same people,on both my gran's dad's side and my grandad's dad's side.

Their fathers were brothers,in fact the 2 next to each other in age ,one born 1868 and the other 1870.

It does make the tree look confusing with these cousins marriages, but I guess when you grow up in the countryside there's probably not much choice of people to marry!

Thanks for all the tips on recording these types of marriages, I appreciate it  :)

Yes they carried the notion of "keeping it in the family" a little too literally.lol
