Catherine Mckeane/Mckean/McKane born in Dublin 1862
« on: Monday 11 August 14 08:13 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am researching Catherine Mckeane/Mckean/McKane born in Dublin 1862. I've had great difficulties locating her birth record over the past few years, gave up, so I thought I would try again.
Catherine was born in Dublin 1862 according to the 1911 England census in the town of Whitehaven. She married John Lowrey on July 1st 1880 in Stoke Damerel, Devon, England at the Michael & Joseph Roman Catholic Church.
Catherine's father was a career military soldier named John Francis Mckeane born 1818 in Ennistymon, County Clare and died in 1895 Whitehaven,Cumberland,England. John's military records indicate that he spent leave in Dublin.
Catherines father John McKeane married Catherine Baird (b.1843 Ireland) around 1861. The 1861 England census  shows Catherine Baird living in Preston, Lancashire, England as a Linen Spinner age 18.
That's about all the information I have to offer the group. I hope it is enough to go by and come up with a lead.

Thank you for your time.

Take care,

SL

Hi SL

WELL,

I have an interesting lead for you !

I have found a Kate McKeane baptised 1861 to a John McKeane & Catherine Baird in Laois, Ireland.

Given all the variables this HAS to be her.

Could she have been born 'out of wedlock' - do you have her parent's marriage ?

Could the 1861 Catherine Baird in England be incorrect and infact she was already married to John ?

Could Catherine have been born in Dublin, yet baptised in Laois - very possible, especially given that her father was a military man and was on the move.

Anyway, the record is on rootsireland which is a pay per view site.

It will be 4 euro to see a transcription of the church record.

It is pot luck as to what other info you will get on the transcription.

Please bear in mind that our civil registration only began in 1864 so there will be no civil birth record for her.

The free index on IFHF shows that she was baptised in Portlaoise which would have been St. Peter & Paul's Church.

It was demolished years ago and a new church stands in it's place but I did find this picture of the previous one !

Ancestry has that birth record and the original register image.
Not much more info on it other that the baptism took place on 24 April 1861.

Thanks

Hi Tara
Searched for Kate McKean 1861-
Ireland, Select Catholic Birth and Baptism Registers, 1763-1912
yep actually BAIRD is spelled BIERDS.
Can't find a corresponding marriage anywhere.

Super ~ Thanks

Hum, says he was residing in Maryborough (old name for Portlaoise)

HA, holidaying maybe.

Possibly just passing through as you HAD to go through Portlaoise in those days to get to a lot of other counties at the time ) prior to our lovely M7.

There were a few small military postings in the general Laois area so may have been posted there for a short time.

MAY have been dealing with Portlaoise Prison, in a military capacity for a while.

All just ideas for SL !

Anyway, it will be great for SL to see the original register.

Hello Tara & Hasta,

My goodness, what a lead indeed? I am so happy thank you ever so much.
Tara, I do not have Catherine's parents marriage unfortunately and yes the 1861 census might not be the same Catherine Baird for sure. The daughter Catherine being born in Dublin and baptised in Laois is also possible, I agree.
The next thing for me to do, is purchase those documents. :) Hasta, Beirdes is the spelling on Catherine & Johns other daughter Mary's birth certificate 1866 Miletown,Sheerness,England. I thought it was a mis-spelling.
Thank you for the links to the great old church. I will be investigating it further.
Off to purchase the documents.

Thank you again,
I'll be in touch with my findings.

:)
