I have been looking for information regarding what somebody described as a Compositor on a census as a Compositor would have done for a living

from what I can tell it is to do with the printing process

Compositor - A person who sets the text or type for printing.

In "A Dictionary of Occupational Terms" there are a compositor (hand), compositor (linotype), compositor (music), compositor (jobbing), and compositor (rubber stamps).
