Why am I finding WW1 records on Ancestry which have a join up date of 1900 on them please?

Presumably they had already enlisted for the 2nd Boer War (1900-1902)?

Thanks - I've just found a relative with WW1 records who joined up in 1889.  Are they just putting any army service down as WW1?

Theres a lot of misfiling happened after the Blitz if they had WW1 service they are mainly in the Burnt records however some are in FindMyPast pre 1915 Records too.
If you suspect Boer War Service then also check British Army Campaign Medals on Ancestry.

Records were filed according to date of discharge. In theory records up to the end of 1913 are with Findmypast. Records for men discharged 1st January 1914 to (August?) 1920 are with Ancestry. Discharge came after any time in the Army Reserve.

You need to read the records to see if there was a break in service. Sometimes they carried on with the first set of records even after a break.

As Ady there is also a chance of misfiling. I once came across a 60-day emergency enlistment from the 1920s in with pre WW1 records.
