Lesmahagow MIs SCOTT
« on: Thursday 07 August 14 14:30 BST (UK) »
Was wondering if anyone has access to old MIs for Lesmahagow? I'm looking for my ggggg grandmother Margaret Scott nee Thomson who I've been told died in 1842 but I have no proof  :( Her husband was Alexander Scott of Hallhill (1765-1830).

Thankyou,
Adrianne

There is a listed MI in Lesmahagow churchyard, that seems to fit.
my abbreviated entry reads: erected by James Scott died 9.5.1851 age 52 to father Alex farmer Hallhill 20.11.1830 age 65, mother Margaret Thompson died 1842 age 77, wife Margaret Brown died 21.7.1876 age 78, daughter Jane died 8.5.1838 age 16, son John died 30.4.1855 age 28.

Thank you Pari Passu! That is wonderful information. Couldn't be better actually  ;D ;D ;D

Would it be too much to ask for another look up?

Alex and Margaret Scott's son John married Janet Allan. Her parents were James ALLAN and Jean TEMPLETON. I have her parents on the 1821 census but nothing afterwards. They ran the mill at Corra Mill but there's no sign of them in 1841, just the kids. I don't know how your MIs are indexed. If that is too big a search, please don't worry about it, but after such brilliant results with the Scott's, I couldn't resist asking :D

Thankyou again,

Adrianne

You're very welcome, it's no trouble.
You are lucky again, my mid 1970's survey shows that there is a stone with the following:
James Allan late miller Corramill died 22.5.1833 age 81, wife Jean Templeton died 25.1.1841 age 71, son William died 19.3.1816 age 15.
A slightly fuller inscription from a more recent survey has:
Here lies the body of James Allan late Miller in Co...mill d. 22.5.1833 aged 81y and his son William Allan d. 19.3.1810 aged 15y and Joan Templeton his ... d. .... aged ..
I think there is about 40 years between surveys, so it shows even in that time stones can become much more difficult to read and as with William's year of death transcribed wrongly.

Wow! Thank you!!! That's wonderful as I had no idea of their birth or death years! I feel very lucky  ;D

Thanks for showing me both versions, very interesting. It's amazing the difference 40 years can make.

Hi Pari Passu,

Thank you for all your previous help. I was wondering if you could please do another look up for me in the Lesmahagow MIs?

One of my ggggggrandfathers was John Thomson. On the birth of his last daughter on 10 Nov 1815 in Crossford, he is listed as deceased. His wife was Margaret Gray. Apart from his occupation, master watchmaker, I have no other info on him.

Any info would be greatly appreciated,

Adrianne

There is no memorial inscription to either John Thomson nor Margaret Gray in Lesmahagow churchyard, so no luck there. There is a mention in the death records of a John Thomson who was buried in September 1815, aged 65, but there are no other details, the date would fit but only if Margaret was a lot younger!

Is there by any chance a mention of John Stewart?

He was born in Balquhidder in 1796/7, married Mary Scott in East Kilbride in 1830, and had six of a family. In 1851 he was described as a coal miner in the census, when the family was at Auchenheath.

The next reference I have is to a possible death of Mary in Maryland, USA in 1875. I don't know if it's the right Mary, and if so whether John died before she emigrated, or whether he also emigrated and died in North America.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
