Ambrose P. Pomeroy - Zeppelin
« on: Monday 04 August 14 23:26 BST (UK) »

Hello,

Have any of you local historians out there ever come across mention of an Ambrose P. Pomeroy as a victim of the September 13th 1916 Zeppelin attack on London? He died at Guy's Hospital on the 15th September (according to his probate) and I am wondering if there is a connection.

I have been searching for a Pomeroy - first name lost - who was a fiance of a great-great-aunt of mine. He died, according to family lore, as the result of "a bomb dropped from a flying craft. It was behind where they lived." Ambrose P. does not quite fit the latter, but given his dates, he seems to me to be a fitting candidate for the bomb story.

Many thanks,

~ Jacobea

I must have read a mistranscription! Thanks you for pointing this out, he can't be the Pomeroy I'm after.

Maybe a copy of the Will would help - he might even name his fiancee !

Edited to add - Just looked at the entry and see it was Administration not Probate, so there was no will.
So cancel that idea!

I wouldn't 100% rule him out - maybe your Pomeroy was injured in a Zeppelin attack and died later? The family may not have remembered the details other than that his death was connected to the attack.

This has him as "of 17 Lupus Street, Pimlico" at death, if that helps one way or another.

Unfortunately no-one in the family has any more information :( His death caused my great-great aunt (born 1892) to have a serious breakdown, so the subject was little spoken of. She lived in Homerton and was a court dressmaker, and it was assumed that her Pomeroy was a fellow Londoner because it was always said that he "died at home". We don't even know if he was serving or not.

Of the two candidates I had that seemed likely, the first turned out to have gotten married in 1914. Ambrose was the other, but there don't appear to have been any fatal zeppelin attacks in London around the time he died. Although he could well have been injured earlier as you pointed out jorose, though if that's the case, it must have been something of a lingering death.

Are you sure it would have been 1916 a first flying bomb dropped on Hackney 1915.
