19th Aug 1915, William Varley, 48, 11th Manchester Regt

Willaim Varley was my Great Grandfather. He was born in Liverpool in 1867 and had moved to Salford by 1871. He married Sarah Hannah Betney on 3rd November, 1890 in Manchester. He had 6 children, though 2 had died has babies. His occupation was a Gas Stoker at the Gasworks in Manchester. He joined up on 28th Sept, 1914 and was a Private in the 11th Manchester Regt, Service Number 9602. He was killed on the 19th Aug,1915 at Gallipoli and is remembered on The Helles Memorial, Panel 158-170. He was 47 years old when he joined up, so I understand that he must have lied about his age, because he would have been over the age limit, and he was 48 when he was killed. I am very proud of him and he will always be remembered.

'I wore a Tunic'

Tune: 'I wore a Tulip'

I wore a tunic, a lousy khaki tunic,
And you wore your civvy clothes.
We fought and bled at Loos
While you were home on the booze
The booze that no one here knows.
Oh you were with the wenches
While we were in the trenches
Facing an angry foe.
Oh you were a-slacking
While we were attacking
The Jerry on the Menin Road.
Lest We Forget

Hi
I saw your posting on Rootsweb and thought I would message you about William Varley.  William and Sarah Betney were my ex husbands grand parents.
Even though hubby is an ex I am doing Varley family history for him and our children.  I have gone back to my 28th Great Grand parent on mine so now to tackle his.
I thought you would like to know that William and Sarah didn't just have 6 children they had 9.  I have found 8 so far, just one to go.  Even there son Harry didn't know there were more than three sisters.
Harry Varley son of William and Sarah was my father in law as my husband Harry was born when his father was in his 50s.  My husband is 65 (this week actually).  My father in law didn't keep in touch with his family since a fall out back in the 1940s, however he did see one of his sisters just before he died in 1980.  Harry would love to hear from a family member
