Sedgwick/Hayward family
« on: Thursday 31 July 14 10:21 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone
I have recently been researching my g g grandfather a certain George Hayward who was a soldier stationed at Dover Castle. he married Mary Ann Elisebeth Sedgwick in 1878 at Folkestone Parish church
Marys parents were Henry Sedgwick  and Sarah Ann Dawkins (nee Partridge) Henry was the son of John Else sedgwick senior and the brother of John else Sedgwick junior. From what I can Gather their line goes back directly to John Sedgwick born in lenham 1710.

I don't know what happened to either Mary Ann Elisebeth or George hayward all I know is George was a soldier in the 58th  Rutland foot regiment and in 1879 soldiers from his regiment were sent to south Africa to fight in the Zulu wars.I haven't found out if he was sent as well.
I have not been doing this long so if you or anyone out there has any more info on Mary Ann Elisebeth Hayward nee Sedgwick or her husband George Hayward, it would be great.

Regards Stuarteljas
PS I have read Dawns post re the reunion and would love to attend if possible

Hi stuarteljas and welcome to Rootschat

Do you have george's approximate date and place of birth to make it easier to look at possible military records?

I think George was born in Shropshire in or near Beckbury Shifnal area but have not yet uncovered his DOB
I also think his fathers name was John and mothers name was ellen nee rokelle or rochelle married in Beckbury shropshire 23rd november 1846.

Also found a George Hayward age 20 was executed on the 3rd of August 1833 for murder committed in Beckbury ! might be related to John

thanks for the quick responses

Hi
It looks like there's a military record for George Hayward on Find My Past.
Born 1851 he signed up in Shrewsbury in 1876.
This should tell you more about where he was posted and confirm his marriage and children etc.
Unfortunately I don't have a sub for the site but perhaps someone else does and can check it's your man.
