Finding record of Silver War Badge recipients
« on: Tuesday 29 July 14 23:12 BST (UK) »
My Grandfather Petty Officer Evan Thomas Ellis  Z/205 RNVR was seriously wounded by shrapnel, during the Gallipoli campaign, and invalided out of the Navy in 1916. I cannot find any record of him receiving the SWB which was issued to all men who were injured and had to leave the armed forces during WW1. Can anybody help?

Thanks Ady. I have his record from Ancestry Naval medals and awards roll but cannot see the SWB number 100. I can see the VM, BWM and Star awarded to him. Am I missing something on the record?

Edit... Now found it by putting Silver War Badge in Keywords of search page, thanks a million Ady been looking for this for 3 years or more.

It's worth noting that the Silver War Badge was only issued to those who applied for it - it was not automatically granted. So it is entirely possible that a chap who was invalided out after being wounded did not receive a SWB.

Less than half of the 2 million plus who were invalided out of the services during the Great War actually applied for the SWB. Doubt that relatives could now apply on behalf of ancestors as I believe the MoD have stopped issuing retrospective WW1 medals and award.
