Alimony payments in the 1940's

 I wonder if there is anyone that can advise me or point me in the right direction please. I am researching a family where a mother was divorced in 1947 following an affair while her husband was away at war, whereby a child was born in 1943 in Woking, Surrey.
The child does not know the name and her mother, who dies in 1968, did not talk about him. He was not named in the divorce papers.
It is believed that her mother received alimony following a court case, as the affair ended badly. Does anyone know where I can find the records for the court case for the 1940's?

Surely the husband would not have to pay alimony if the wife was the one having the affair. Maybe she made a claim against the other man for child support if he was the father.

Have you thought of buying the child's Birth Certificate to see if the father is named?

Thank you for the replies. I have the birth certificate and regrettably the father is blank. I must reiterate that I am trying to trace the father who paid the alimony not the husband who divorced the mother because of the affair while he was away at war.

I am unsure to what court would hold the case papers for the 1940's or whether they would have been transferred to an archive.

If he was paying alimony then they must have married. Have you looked for a second marriage for her?

The Surrey Quarter Sessions for that time are held in Surrey History Centre, you could e-mail them on shs@surreycc.gov.uk or Telephone 01483518737. They will probably charge for a search.
