Marshall/Elphick
« on: Tuesday 29 July 14 05:13 BST (UK) »
Have a marriage for Mille Marshall and William Elphick, 4th May 1780 at Herstmonceaux, Sussex, and suspect they MAY be the parents of my 4xgtgrandfather Richard Elphick who was chr. at Herstmonceaux 25 Dec 1785. Would love to find any further information regarding this family eg. birth and death dates of William and Mille. Their other children may have been William 1780 Thomas 1780, another William 1783, Mary 1781, John 1787. Richard Elphick (1785) married Martha Cruttenden, at Hollington, SSX, 1812, they eventually lived at Hawkhurst Kent.
Hopefully someone can set me on the right track regarding these families.
Shirl.

Hi Shirl,
Had a look on the Sussex Marriage Index & they were married by licence.
Not sure if you have this information but here it is;
Archdeaconry of Lewes Marriage Licence.
29/4/1780.
William, bach.  24 years. Yeoman from Herstmonceaux.
Millicent. spinster age 21, Of same Parish.
Wit: WE (I take that to be William Elphick, so possibly his father?) John Marshall, yeoman, Of the Same Parish,

Jane

Hi Shirl,

Don't know if these are relevant ....

there is a baptism for William Elphick at All Saints Herstmonceaux on 5 March 1755, son of Richard and Sarah

and a burial for a Mildred Elphick 22 May 1792, wife of William. This is also at All Saints Herstmonceaux.

Both may not be relevant because this William is not the son of a William, so who is the marriage witness ?.....and Mildred is not Mille or Millicent. Just thought I'd pass on the records in case they do help you at all.
Best wishes HL

Thanks so much Jane I did not have that info, excellent work!
And also thanks HL,  I actually wondered if Mille was an abbreviation of Mildred or Millicent. I also suspect that William's parents may have been Richard and Sarah Lulham? Once again thanks so much to both of you. :) :) :) :)

There is a marriage at Herstmonceaux between Richard Elphick (widower) and Sarah Lulham (widow) by licence on 16th June 1754

Then there's a previous marriage which may be him....Richard Elphick (batchelor) and Sarah Smith (spinster) on 9th February 1740/41 at Herstmonceaux

I can't find a relevant burial for the first Sarah Elphick between 1740 and 1754 though.
Best wishes HL

Going on from my last reply, I've looked at Sarah Lulham (widow)...

on 26th April 1743 Sarah Mitten married Edward Lulham, at Herstmonceaux.

Edward Lulham was then buried at Herstmonceaux on 5th May 1752
Best wishes HL

Thanks HL for doing those lookups for me, now I'm more confused than ever, I have been looking at all the info I have and cannot decide which Richard is "mine".   ???
This is some of what I can verify through census, civil reg. certs etc.
Richard Elphick  (3xgtgrandfather) born 1817 at Herstmonceaux to parents Richard Elphick, born 1785,at Herstmonceaux  and Martha Cruttenden, born about 1815 at Hollington SSX. Richard(1785) died in Hawkhurst, Kent in 1869 aged 84. I have him on 41, 51 and 61 census all in Hawkhurst. Martha died in 1849 aged 53 so she only appears on 41 census.
Richard (1817) married in 1836 to Bathsheba Friend born 1815 at Hawkhurst. They came to Aus. but sadly Richard died enroute, Bathsheba and 2 sons arrived here 1841. I am unsure of how to go about finding any further info to verify who were Richard's (1785) parents, can't be 100% sure that William Elphick and Mille Marshall are the ones, although they seem most likely, however if you take into consideration of naming patterns, Mille, Mildred,Millicent do not appear in later generations, but William and Richard appear time and again! Hope someone can make sense of all this, thought maybe I'd just put it out there, sometimes another person can see something different!
Regards, Shirl.

I can absolutely see where you're coming from Shirl and was worried I may be confusing things. There are many online public trees with some of your people on and so I can understand your confusion and see the need to proceed with great care.

Have you considered membership of Sussex Family History Group as for a small annual fee you have access to their excellent online Parish Records. It is possible to subscribe from overseas and that may help you to untangle them.

I do wish you luck and like others on RC don't mind (and enjoy) helping you in this but I really don't want to add your confusion  :)
Best wishes HL

I hadn't thought about membership of Sussex family history group but will definitely consider it, good thinking!
Thanks again for your help. Think I'll put it all away for tonight, maybe some great ideas will come tome overnight!  :)
