In the Suffolk Marriage Index this marriage for Robert Alexander to Elizabeth Sparks was on 9-8-1812 in Mettingham All Saints.

Does any kind person have access to parish registers for Mettingham, to find more details of above marriage. Witnesses and status of bride and groom. I have been unable to find a baptism for Elizabeth Sparks and given her age at marriage wonder whether she was a widow and so her name at birth would not be Sparks.

thanks

I have just been looking at Mettingham records again (transcripts on FreeReg).
As well as Robert Alexander baptised on 28 Aug 1814, there is a burial of a Robert Fenn Alexander  age 9 months on 21 May 1815. Was Elizabeth Sparks a widow when she married Robert snr and her  maiden name was Fenn?

Hi LizzieL,

The marriage of Robert Alexander to Elizabeth Sparks 9-8-1812 does not indicate she was a widow per the Suffolk FHS marriage CD.

I have been unable to find a baptism for Elizabeth Sparks

Not sure if these are of any use;

There is an Elizabeth Spark bapt. 27-9-1778 Wangford (Nr.Southwold) St.Peter. (d/o Peter & Elizabeth)

Also Elizabeth Sparks bapt. 8-4-1782 Peasenhall St.Michael (d/o James & Phillis)

Thank you, Alan
Anything's worth looking into. I only have the 1851 census to say she was born in Bungay, she died before the 1861. Robert might have been guessing when he filled in the census form or the enumerator made an error transcribing it.

But where does the name Fenn come from?

There is an Elizabeth Spark bapt. 27-9-1778 Wangford (Nr.Southwold) St.Peter. (d/o Peter & Elizabeth)

There is a Peter Spark buried in Cretingham in 1812, age at death gives a birth year of abt 1745.

He could be the Peter who married Elizabeth List at Framsden on 05 Oct 1777. The transcript says his parish is Henham (which is near Wangford. Peter and Elizabeth had a son Peter baptised at Wangford 24 Jun 1786 (record says late List). He might be the one buried at Framsden on 10 Nov 1787, although the transcript doesn't mention age or parents.
Peter appears on the Death duty register on FindMyPast. Duty paid by James Kingston. There is a marriage at Cretingham on 19 May 1806 between Elizabeth Spark and James Kingeston (sic). James is a farmer of Raydon by Southwold.

There are later baptisms in Cretingham for children of Peter and Elizabeth late List, so it is all one family and eliminates Elizabeth Spark baptised in Wangford as she married James Kingston - mentioned in Peter's will.
