Forgive me for this, but I'm not seeing many connections, so far with Staffordshire.  :-\

5 February 1877 - burial of Peter Stephan of Jackfield (Shropshire) aged 81 at Jackfield (Shropshire)
17 August  1826 - burial of Sarah Stephan of Coalport (Staffordshire oops!  Shropshire  ;D) aged 28 at Madelely (Shropshire)
1 August 1850 - marriage of Peter Stephan and Susannah Bradley at Broseley (Shropshire) - William Stephan and Eliza Stephan are witnesses.
4 July 1818 - marriage of Peter Stephan and Sarah Shenton at Broseley (Shropshire) - Elizabeth Stephan a witness.

Added:  any baptism for people of Shelton, pre 1834, would possibly have taken place at St Peter in Stoke.  The parish of St Mark, Shelton was formed 1843, but baptism records commence 1834.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Hi BumbleB!

That's all the right family but you're right that's it's Shropshire based. They moved to Shropshire sometimes between 1802 and 1818, but it's not clear when exactly.

Peter's mother and father married at st John's Hanley in 1801 . I have a copy of the marriage cert and it is thought that Peter Jnr and one or two of his brothers were born in Shelton (or that area) before they all moved to Shropshire.

I've just got back from Lichfield Record Office.

The 18 December 1801 marriage for Peter and Hannah Johnson - well, you have the entry.  :)  But the venue was St Peter in Stoke on Trent, not St John in Hanley.

I checked baptisms at St Peter in Stoke from 1790-1810 and there are no entries for the surname Stephan. I double-checked with the transcribed baptisms.  This was the only Anglican Church in SoT at that time.

The only other thought is either non-conformist or Roman Catholic, neither of which are at Lichfield.

I did note that the 1818 marriage is by Licence - it might be interesting to see if the Bond and Allegation have survived, and I believe these would be held at Hereford Records Office. I've found that they invariably have an age for bride and groom, apart from being nice to have  ;D

Oh thank you ever so much and yes you're quite right about the church/location of the marriage - thats just me being dopey. I do have it recorded right, it's just that someone suggested St John Hanley to me previously.

They sometimes spelt the surname Strephon too but I'm sure you would have noticed that if you looked through from 1790-1810. Thank you ever so much for doing that, I really appreciate it.

Peter Stephan Snr whom married Hannah was actually Pierre Stephan and was thought to be french-swiss - Do you think it likely therefore that they may be registered as non-conformist births? - I assume they would be held at Staffs or Stoke.

Interesting to learn about the 1818 marriage for Peter Jnr being by license; might be able to get some more info on that. Do you mind me asking why it would be held at Hereford and not the main Shropshire Archives? I'm in Shrewsbury ya see.

Yes, I was aware of a possible surname variation, but there was nothing remotely like Stephan.

Marriage Licences were issued by the Diocese - Shropshire was split mainly between Lichfield - north Shropshire, and Hereford - south Shropshire, with one of two areas under Diocese of St Asaph.

I can't attach the appropriate page here on this forum.  Not sure if I can do it by PM.  I'll try.

Hello girls, I have just joined Rootschat and am researching my family tree which has Henry Stephan/Strephon born 1801 married to a Sarah as father of Emily Stephan who married William Edmund Hancock 1840-1903. Wm Ed was born in Madeley, Shropshire, son of Job Taylor Hancock, my 2x great grandfather. Henry was brother of William 1798-1872 and Peter 1796-1877. I know it doesn't help much with Pierre's history but it may widen your family tree. I live just outside Wrexham and intend visiting Madeley and Coalport in the near future to see what I can find out. Best Wishes Hazel

Hi Hazel. Lovely to come across another Stephan ancestor. I am descended from the Peter Stephan 1796 nd knew of the other 3 brothers but thank you! I am slowly getting more info on old Pierre.

Hope you have a lovely time in Madeley/Coalport, it's a beautiful part of the world.
