Henry and Sarah Ann Aldridge
« on: Sunday 27 July 14 03:01 BST (UK) »
Hello there, I am looking for information on Henry Aldridge (born in Stevenage - around 1862), died March 1893 (Hitchin). His children (Sarah, Charles and Hannah) were orphaned in 1895 (death of his wife Sarah Ann). His son Charles (my husband's grandfather) was sent to Canada as a British Home Child in 1901. I would like to know any details of Henry's death (or of his wife Sarah Ann). They died quite young - but I don't know how (illness, I would suspect). I haven't managed to find any grave information (I have checked the Stevenage site). According to the 1911 Census, their daughter Sarah was working as a servant in Hyde Park - but I have no other information on her. Her sister Hannah was also working as a servant in Paddington - again, no other information. One of the girls contacted Charles' son (my father-in-law) many years ago but alas the letter has been lost so I don't know which of the girls it was (I would have loved to see the contents of that letter!).  I am struggling to find Henry's family (parents, siblings) but there were a lot of Aldridges around Stevenage at the time - and many names repeated throughout the family (makes it hard to find who's who....). Thanks for any help that you can give me!

you say Hannah as a child - could it have been ANNA ?
Anna Aldridge born 28th May 1890 - bap 6th sep 1891 - Stevenage ,Hertford - Henry / Sarah
Sarah Aldridge born 14th oct 1885 - bap 6th may 1888 - Stevenage ,Hertford - Henry / Sarah
I am presuming the marriage is - jun qtr 1884 Henry Aldridge to Sarah Ann Upton - Hitchin ,Herts
Charles H Aldridge b  1888 - Stevenage is a boarder at Hanley Castle, Worcestershire  as an Orphan in the 1901 census aged 13
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XSS1-JG7
presumably your husbands grandfather was born Charles Henry Aldridge ??

www.freebmd.org.uk gives the death of Henry Aldridge in mar qtr 1893 as aged 31 - so this means unless he was born jan /feb/mar of 1862 - he was probably b 1861 ..
there is only one Henry registered in Hertfordshire in 1861 /1862
Henry James Aldridge b jun qtr 1861 Hertford 3a 267 - this birth fits perfect age wise with the death in 1893...
www.familysearch.org only has the one record
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NR47-NX7
just your luck for there to be no father ...
but you have to consider that Henry Aldridge who died in 1893 may not have been born in Hertfordshire ...do you have him with the family in 1891 census - this will tell you where he was born ..?

this looks like Jane Aldridge in Benego in 1861 census ( where Henry James Aldridge was born )..aged 24 - so born 1836/37
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M7NC-WTZ
again - familysearch only shows one baptism - and again ,no father is shown
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M7NC-WTZ
possibly Ann Aldridge baptism - again in Benego
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NGFC-8YT

maybe another member can find the family in Benego 1841 / 1851 / 1861 census ??

Thank you for all the effort you've put in to find the information that I asked for. I hit the jackpot today when I found out that the UK/Irish records were free to peruse this weekend. I think I managed to find out who everyone was.  I think I have traced my husband's family back to Emanuel Aldridge (b 1808). Unfortunately, I haven't found out why Henry and Sarah Ann died so young (and left three young children). I also haven't found out when their daughters Sarah and Hannah died (the last place that I found them was in the 1911 census working as servants). Could it be that if they died while working as a servant, their death was not recorded? The other possibility is that they were married and were listed on the death certificate under their married name.

Hannah - was baptised Anna ...so if you look for marriage for her - look for Anna Aldridge as well as Hannah  :)
