Jamaica Family Tree Help?
« on: Friday 25 July 14 19:24 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I would very much like to research the Jamaican side of my family.  I have successfully done research on my mother's family who were from Scotland.  I only have the following information.
My father, Derrick George Smith, was born on the 15th of March 1939 in St Andrew, Jamaica and he passed away on the 24th of May 1998 in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada.  He immigrated to Toronto, Canada in the early 1960s.  His sister, my aunt is still alive and she also lives in Canada in the same area.  Their father was Vernon Smith and he died somewhere between 1940-1944 in an accident.  He was married to my grandmother, Muriel Catherine Ferguson Smith and she was born in March 1917 in St Andrew and died in April of 2006 in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada.  I have no idea about my grandfather and his side of the family and I really want to know more.  All I know is that he had a sister called Amy and it was thought that she moved to England at some point but I'm not sure.  I know it doesn't help having a surname like Smith but any help would be greatly appreciated.  I don't want for my paternal side of my family tree to be blank in comparison to my maternal side.  Can anyone guide me as to the best route to take?
Thank you

I remember reading a couple of other posts on here recently about Jamaican records. Suggest you search for them and see what hints were given. I think there was a link to records on either ancestry or familysearch.

Thank you Craclyn.  I have tried to look on Ancestry but I'm not sure if the records are limited as I could not find my father's birth listed on there.
