marriage of William Howis to Eliza, Sussex, abt. 1847

I am related to Eliza Howis who was a convict, transported to Van Diemen's Land with her son James and William on the ship "Anna Maria" 1851-1852. I need to know her parents's names and details of her sons' births.

In the 1851 census Eliza Howis was in the County Prison in Lewes. Census ref: HO107/1643/485/66

Thanks for that. I believe that her older son was in a Union workhouse somewhere too. I would like to get information about her marriage to William Howis and her maiden name if possible so I can track down her parents and siblings. I believe that William was also arrested over the charge of receiving stolen goods, but I do not know if he received jail sentence or transportation as she did.

We are not told the boys' approximate ages, but James may be the James Howis born Mar qtr 1849 Cuckfield.  A public tree has his death aged 2 on 17 Jan 1852 "on board convict ship Anna Maria with his mother".

As James Howess, 2 b Cuckfield, he was in Ticehurst Union Workhouse in the 1851 census. Ho107/1639/182/8.

You'd need to order the birth certificate for further details of his birth.

She was Eliza Howis alias Brooks in a newspaper report of her trial - sentenced to 14 years transportation for feloniously receiving stolen goods as a result of a burglary at Portslade.  A large quantity of drapery goods had been stolen from the shop of William Baker, grocer & draper, of Portslade.

I see from the surgeon's journal of the relevant voyage that Eliza, James (3) and William (1) all suffered from dysentery during their time on board.  Eliza and William recovered but James died on 17 Jan 1852.

You already seem to have James but here he is again
James Howis Mar 1849 7 371 Cuckfield
William Howiss Mar 1851 Ticehurst 7 561
Buying either cert will give you Eliza's maiden name.

In 1851 census James age 2 is in Ticehurst workhouse born Cookfield

There is a death for William at Hobart age 1 28.2.1852.

Eliza's birthplace is Cowfield so probably the same place.
William Howis born 1823 had been imprisoned for 3 mths 6.4.1843 for larceny.
That's the last I can see of him.
They don't seem to have married as they are not in the GRO index 1837-1852.

You could also try Eliza's 28.2.1853 Australian marriage to Frederick Butler or her death 1901 in Beaconsfield Tasmania ,they should both have her maiden name I believe.

You could take the baptism for an Eliza at Cuckfield an eliminate each one
There's Mitchel,Tester and Daws for 1828/1827.It's not Tester as she married someone else in 1850.
1830 give Packham,Prosser and Marten but you're better off getting those birth certificates.
