Eliza's birthplace is Cowfold per 1851 (enumerator's schedule).

Since she's unmarried in the 1851 census and on William's 1851 baptism I'd think a baptism for her in surname Howis (or variants) most likely.

Siblings James 8.7.1832 Albourne and Abraham 5.2.1837 Ardingley.

I agree that James was in the Union Workhouse, but I would like verification of father's name and town, age etc. I have looked through a number of sources, such as 1841 and 1851 census for Sussex area, finding Eliza and child James, but not youngest child, William. The record I found Eliza's sentence at Lewes assizes, mentioned that she was arrested with her husband James and father William but no surnames were given, making me wonder whether it was her father or husband's father. The other interesting thing about tracking this couple is that I was able to get much more information about Eliza as a female convict, what happened to her in Tasmania etc. But both her first husband, a convict, and eventual husband in Tasmania, were so much harder to find.

I can only see Silvester Howes in 1841 at the workhouse.

The Silvester Howis death in 1838 is Cuckfield registration district, (which includes Cowfold) not Cuckfield parish.

As previously mentioned, you will need the birth certificates for details of the births.  Index details have been given earlier in the thread. However, Eliza is unmarried in the 1851 census and a single woman on William's 1851 baptism, so it appears the boys were born out of wedlock and in those circumstances the father is very unlikely to be named on the birth certificate.

At Eliza's trial she was Eliza Howis alias Brooks, and a police superintendent gave evidence that he had "found some property upon prisoner Howis, and also in a barn in which she had resided with Brooks".

The first name of the male "Brooks" is not stated in the report (her fellow accused were James Edward(e)s, his wife Sarah Edward(e)s, and a James Gulvin alias Bull).

It is possible that the man with whom she lived in the barn was William Brooks, 30, who was on trial at the same Assizes for a different burglary, this one at Uckfield. His trial report mentions his organising a rendezvous at a barn between Leigh and Betchworth, though it does not say that he lived in the barn.  He was convicted of burglary and sentenced to transportation for life.

Baby William is likely to be the William "Harris" born Burwash, 2 months old, prisoner's child, listed at Lewes prison on the page immediately after Eliza's enumeration page in 1851.  Howis might easily have been mistakenly changed to Harris.

The Burwash birthplace matches the Burwash baptism found for William in February 1851, earlier in the thread (reply #7).

I see from the surgeon's journal of the relevant voyage that Eliza, James (3) and William (1) all suffered from dysentery during their time on board.  Eliza and William recovered but James died on 17 Jan 1852.

Can you please tell me where the surgeon's journals are to be found for different voyages?
