Gauge Family - Francois Gauge b 1769
« on: Tuesday 22 July 14 06:06 BST (UK) »
I am seeking further information on the birth, birthplace and parents of Francois Gauge born 1769 (potentially in Bearn, Berenx, France). Francois is believed to have escaped France during the revolution and settled in England (Oswestry, Shropshire) where he married Margaret Edwards (b 1771) and ran the Ball Hotel in Maesbury, Shropshire. His son, George Daniel Gauge continued to manage the pub after his fathers death in 1844. Any information on Francois's life in France would be appreciated!  :)

Could be Bérenx in Pyrénées-Atlantiques which would probably have been considered part of the old province of Béarn.

The archives have parish records online:
http://earchives.cg64.fr/etat-civil-search-form.html
(put in  Bérenx  with the accents and click the name when it pops up or it doesn't work).

But the writing of the time is quite hard to read and the church records are unindexed.
