McClean
« on: Monday 21 July 14 18:46 BST (UK) »
My great grandparents were James McClean - details unknown and Annie (Jane?) surname possibly Oliver, Jackson or Duncan (died 1955) living in the Ballyclare, Co. Antrim area. They had 3 children: Margaret Jane 31/10/1883, Mary Jackson 10/2/1891 and Joseph 9/3/1899. Can anyone provide background to this couple and when and where they were born and married?

Hi Tallestone

This looks like a likely entry from the 1911 Irish census with Annie already a widow www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001331285/

From this entry, you have Annie showing as having been married for 28 years (up to the date of husband James' death?).

PS: You likely have these census entries already, but adding here for background...

Annie already a widow by 1901 too. Years and dates not quite matching up. The 'married 28 years', maybe she wrote it down as up to 1911? Married c. 1883 maybe?

Given Annie's birth year, this would not likely be her birth but hopefully a sibling? https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FPYR-TPP

Slim pickings I know, but is there any possibility that James McClelland who married Annie Duncan in Kilbride Church of Ireland some 7 months before Margaret Jane's birth in 1883 are the parents?

Such is a big leap, not least that the names McClelland / McClean somehow morphed together in pronunciation and record documentation.

But lots of other brick walls are hitting back, not least why the mother in the census is called Oliver - possibly remarriage(s)?

Not as simple as I first thought, you might want to ask a moderator to move it to County Antrim.
