George and Theresa McAdam 1871 Census The Passage King St Hereford

In the 1871 Census the above were listed (hard to read) at "The Passage" or "In Passage"
The entry above is George's Sister Mrs Townsend at No 21 King St.
We assume that these properties would be more or less next door.
No 21 appears to be the premises occupied now or recently by Concern Universal. I think the other half of the house is occupied by Connells the Real Estate Agents.
There is an opening / Tunnel in the adjacent side of the Russell Baldwin building.
I understand that there is now a Dr's Surgery down this tunnel and across a courtyard.
George was a Dentist and had a family of about 8 children.
Could the tunnel in the Baldwin building conceivably have been described as The Passage or In Passage in 1871, and are there any premises in the back today which could conceivably have been a house of a large family and a Dentists Surgery.

Hi Robuste

I have been looking at this on google earth (I am not local).  If you search 23 King Street (Connells) and just go up the street alongside that runs off Kings Street there are a couple of buildings that may be attached to the back of the adjoining properties. I suspect that one of these is possibly what you are looking for and accesses down the passage between Russell Baldwin's & Concern Univ.

The house numbers seem to tie in, it does not look to me as though they were renumbered though 'In Passage' should have appeared before No 21 but perhaps it was considered part of it.

I would use the expression  "its down the passage in King St"   if asked for directions this morning when I was close by.

Old photos of king st show no other passage, although there is an entrance to a yard on the other side of the street, wide enough for a vehicle so not a passage.

the national library of Scotland has a site with large scale maps of the uk from the 1880's large enough to show individual properties, not easy to navigate but worth aa look.

the passageway is shown on a map dated 1757.

I did not look  , but there is a nameplate on the wall rhs listing other buisnesses whose entrances are down the passage so I guess it does. it is one of the few we have not explored.  Herefordshire is full of these little passages. some of them lead to architectural gems, others not so salubrious.

central Hereford was pretty overcrowded in those days, note King Street was called Kings Ditch in earlier days, may have been an apt description.

I will go and look next time I am in town, but I'm not sure when that will be

hi Rod,
we were in town today and yes down that passage is a free standing Georgian townhouse in a small courtyard, it looks as if the only proper access to the front of the house is via the passageway as there is a low wall between it and the doctors surgery.
