To KGarrad:

No luck with auto and manual searches on both names in the GRO marriage indexes on ancestry.com.

I'm reasonably certain the first wife died (aged 50) because i have the GRO death index listing - she was a sickly woman suffering from some kind of degenerative condition.

To Heywood:

George's first wife was FRANCES HOPPER and related to the Hopper family of auctioneers.  Born 1863 in Bainbridge.  Married 1890 in Askrigg.  1913 death registered in Leyburn - likely living at NewFound England in Constable Burton at time of death.

Ancestry use the FreeBMD data for most of their BMD information!

So personally, I prefer to use FreeBMD - as it is the closest to the original source?! ;D ;D
Searching is also much easier!! ;D

I think the best we can say is that, IF they got married, it wasn't in England or Wales!

So maybe Scotland? (Different records, different indexes)
Or Ireland?
Or even Isle of Man? (Can't see anything, though!)

It may be best if you stay with one thread and lock the others. Otherwise, you run the risk of the same comments being repeated.

To KGarrad:

Interesting info on source for BMD data - useful for future reference.

Regarding a marriage taking place beyond Yorkshire or the Lake District, I'm not optimistic.  The vast majority of my ancestors tended to be farmers and the like of modest means who preferred to stay put in 'God's Own Country'.  :P Even the Lake District is a bit a of a trek!

I haven't got any leads to work with for looking into Scotland.  As far as Ireland, my grandmother recently took her first holiday ever at the ripe old age of 91  :o - and went over to Roscommon, Ireland in search of Garvey ancestors - no luck there either.

Cheers

Jane

Is anything known of Loretta's pre-marriage life? I can't see a marriage for her and you say it was her first marriage but just thinking she would be mid- thirties when her first child was born.
