Meacham unable to find
« on: Monday 27 June 05 15:59 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help.
Alfred George Meacham
Birth  registered  at Staint George Hanover square, Belgrave            January 1861
Father Alfred Meacham   Drapers Assistant
Mother Jane Meacham   formerly Gate
Address 2 Wilton Mews Wilton street
Jane registered the birth.

I cannot find Wilton Mews, Wilton Street on the 1861 Census
Nor can I find a marriage for Alfred and Jane
The 61,71,81,91 census do not have an Alfred and Jane Meacham.
All the Alfreds appear with other families.
A Jane Meacham appears on the 1891 census aged 46 years, widow.Living as a lodger in Upper Kennington Lane.  I could not find Alfreds death
Jane seems to die 1899 Chelsea aged 55 years (If the right one)

I think that Alfred George appears on the 71 census aged 10 years
living with his grandparrents at 9 Blithfeild street Kensington.
Who are Henry 62 years born Cambridge, occupation coachmaker.
Elizabeth 52 years born Chelsea.
Again I cannot find an marriage for Henry or Elizabeth and have yet to find any references to any children.
I can find him on the 81 and 91. He dies 1894 Berkshire

There maybe a link to Bedfordshire Meacham's/Meecham's
As a James Meecham 40 years, coachman appears on 1871 census
in Amphill, with a son William b. 1856 Pimlico.
Tenuous but Ampthill is not so far from Cambridge

Can anyone help in anyway. As I am not getting any were.
Anne

Hi Anne

What has taken you back to this birth in 1861?  It might help to know how you have got there, as it could help fill the gaps.

cheers

Paul

Hi Paul
I ordered my grandfathers Alfred George Meacham's birth certificate 1894 Easthamsted. His parents marriage certificate 1893 and his fathers death certificate 1894.
Then using  his fathers age and occupation I searched the census's 91 showed him working as a servant in Bray Berkshire. With two of the witnesses from his marrage. The census gave his age as 29 and birth place Pimlico, London.
I then checked the 1881 census. Were he was a visitor in Kensington;
Head  George Styche  Groom 24 years
Lastly I found him in 71 census with his Grandparrents.
From all of this I  got to his birth certificate which shows Belgrave St George Hanover Square, rather than PIMLICO but I am sure it is the right Alfred meacham
Best wishes Anne

Having compared 1871 census entries for Belgrave
with 1861 census, it seems much of Belgrave is missing from the latter.
So not much hope of finding Wilton Mews or Street

Annem
Just checked my 1861 Census Street Index  and this states that the whole of the Belgrave District of St George Hanover Square is missing.
Just thought you might like this confirmation to save you continuing to hunt this census info.

Thank you Barbara
It seems I am at a dead end. I have tried by putting Meacham's/ Meecham's into family groupings from the 61, 71,81 census's but still cannot make any progress.  The missing 61 census for the Belgrave district was my only hope.
