I too have "been there, done that". Early on I skipped buying a birth certificate and attributed my great grandmother to entirely the wrong maternal family whose history I then researched, painstakingly tracing them through the censuses (which at the time were not online or digitally searchable). Only later when I ordered great-granny's birth certificate for my records did I discover her mother's true maiden name, and my elementary error.
