Hi

There is a marriage on familysearch for a George Holland & Alice Wells in Farnsfield 1827.

You have posted this in Yorkshire, is that where they lived.

A shame they both died before the census, as that means you won't have a birthplace for them.

On FamilySearch there's an Alice Wells baptised 16 September 1798 at Averham, parents John Wells and Ann. Averham is not very far from Farnsfield. No-one else names Alice Wells born about the right time, so this could be the one who married George. If you research this Alice Wells further you can see whether she grew up to marry anyone else.

There are a few possibles for George Holland so it's difficult to know which one it could be. There's a George Holland baptised 1803 at Newark upon Trent, which is close to Farnsfield. You could research them and see which you can eliminate and who you're left with.

You've posted this in Yorkshire (East Riding) though, so I'm wondering whether you know anything that means they weren't born in Nottinghamshire?

Regards,
Judy

Hi Judy,

Thank you for the suggestions. They could be "the ones".

Will research the Alice baptised 1898. She named two of her children John and Ann. Is it possible that her age was incorrect on her death certificate? Did they do these sort of things back then?

On her death certificate it says that she was aged 40 years when she died in February 1840 - this was 6 days after George died in 1840. He was aged 37 years. They both died at Doncaster. So George baptised 1803 Newark on Trent could be the one.

Was trying to work out the options to post on, as I am unsure of geographies of the varies counties of England.

The family that I am researching seemed to live in or around Yorkshire - in particular the West Riding areas - Harrogate etc

Cheers

The information on the death certificate is what the informant (person registering the death) knew. So yes, it can be wrong.

Harrogate is a fair way from Nottinghamshire, and also from Doncaster. But people did travel and move greater distances than we sometimes think.

I use google  earth when I am unsure as to the locations which is often  ;D . It does indicate our County boundaries as well.   Farnsfield appears to be in the middle of Nottinghamshire with Derbyshire to the left, Lincolnshire to the right and top right and South Yorkshire top left.

Judy's suggestions make a lot of sense being close to Farnsfield.
