California divorce
« on: Thursday 10 July 14 11:28 BST (UK) »
Eugenie Magnus (1874-1936) went to the US in 1911. She was married in 1896 to Fred W Watkins (aka Fred Leonard) who did not accompany her. In about 1913 she lived with George Ingleton until his death in 1926 in California. They were both involved in the early film industry. In 1929 she married S F Hogue, editor of the San Francisco Globe.
There is no evidence she married George Ingleton. Yet she married S Hogue. Did she divorce her first husband in England or the US? Where can I find these divorce papers? :'(
WATKINS - Greenwich/Deptford 1760-now
FITCHETT - Berks 1790
BARTHOLOMEW - Hants 1860
GOLDING - Essex/Greenwich

California Marriages

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/K8NP-K45

Click on "view document", 2 pages, 2nd page indicates she had been married twice before and that she is now a widow.

Doubt she bothered with a divorce - maybe Fred Watkins/Leonard was deceased by then, or maybe she (correctly) guessed nobody would be able to check/prove that she hadn't been widowed, married to George Ingleton, and then widowed again.  Not at all uncommon - especially as there was an ocean and thirty or so years between her first and last (second, third?) marriage.

At emigrated in 1911 she is under her maiden name but "married". As you say, by 1913 she is travelling with George and is "Mrs Ingleton".  It seems that they were in the same theatre troupe - here they are mentioned in 1912:

It looks like they toured around a number of places so a small chance exists she did marry George somewhere along the tour route (not all US marriages are easily searchable online).
