This photo is similar to paper on thick card, a bit bigger than postcard size.

Thanks for your help.

The nearest I can get is early 20th century, probably just prior to or just after WW1. The Colonial style of building was popular from the beginning of the century and skirt lengths indicate a later period. The style of writing on the back dates it later than around 1910.
Say 1912 to 1920. I know it's not very precise but as near as I can get.

Regards

AJ

If it's any help, the name above the door is C Vincent. The building is very similar style to the Courthouse Hotel on Australia Street.

Thank you both for your input.

Trishanne you are very clever.  I hadn't noticed the name above the shop.  The name may relate to my great grandparents, but I think the timing is wrong.
From what I can work out they were in the area from about 1892, when my grandmother was born in Ballarat and 1898 when my great aunt was born in Melbourne.  A great uncle was born in Balmain in 1896.

By the 1900's they were in Tasmania.  I wonder if I have missed another Vincent coming to Australia.

Oh for a time machine to go back and find out who they were.

The photo must have been taken in the Sydney area to have been processed in Newtown?  (Don't you wish the names of the people could have been written on the back!  I have several photos from the 19th century passed down without names and only family lore to go by.)

Every time I make a new contact I send them photos asking if they know who is in them.  Not been very successful.  Mind you I had some with names on the back and it took me a long time to find them too.
I have since made contact with archivists from Sydney and they say that 1896 was the only year a photographer was at 22 Australia Street, from the Sands Directory.

Hi

I have lived in the Newtown area for many years, this building looks quite familiar. I cant help with the dating, but do you already have details of the adress of the building? To me it looks like a building Ive seen in North Newtown area or nearby Erskineville. This area has many fine buildings of that era (late Victorian/early 20th Century) still exist today which gives it wonderful character. Ill keep a close look in my travels to see if I can locate it. regards. sydney researcher

Sydney researcher that would be fantastic.  I have no idea where it is, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've looked in my "Pictorial History of Newtown" publ. 1999.
It's not in there, though many similar ones are - mostly hotels and this could have been a recycled hotel.
If SydneyResearcher doesn't come up with a solution, maybe you could email Marrickville Council or Sydney City Council (different parts of Newtown come under these different local government councils) Archivists/ Local History librarians and see if they know.  The Marrickville Council person was very helpful to me a few years ago when I was looking for a street where my Mum used to live.
