Confused.. Names of infirmaries/ workhouses, London circa. 1930
« on: Sunday 06 July 14 10:05 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I'm trying to work out where exactly my grandad was placed in care in London around 1930.
In his care records it states he was in "St. Marylebone home" in 1931 as a separated child.
Is this St Marylebone infirmary, later changed to St Charles hospital? Or somewhere else?
It states he was baptised in "st marylebone home chapel".

Secondly, he was then moved to "St Mary Abbot institution" and placed in the nursery there. I'm struggling to find anything about this place existing.

I know that a lot of institutions homes and hospitals changed their names around this time as they were taken over by LCC.
I'm just getting myself all mixed up and would appreciate anyone who can put me straight on the names of places and where I might look for records.

Thank you!

Probably St. Marylebone Workhouse, after 1930, the workhouse became the St Marylebone Institution. http://www.workhouses.org.uk/StMarylebone/  You can see the Chapel on the plan.
There is a reference to St. Marylebone Home, Marylebone Road at  http://www.rootschat.com/links/017us/

From a letter in The Times, Tuesday, Jun 01, 1937; pg. 12; Issue 47699.
"I am aware that the Marylebone Home (formerly known as the St. Marylebone Work house) already exists nearby."
