Silver War Badge collections
« on: Wednesday 02 July 14 11:25 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone

Please can anyone tell me if there is more than one set of records for the Silver War Badge, maybe held in different respositories?

Both FindMyPast & A have a collection but on occasion I am finding a record for a man on one site but not the other and vise versa. And in some cases, although I have found a reference to a man being awarded a SWB from other documents, I can't find a record on either site.
many thanks
MOIRA

Hi Moira

The only set of original rolls that I know of are in the National Archives. One thing you can guarantee is that (if they have not done so already) the NA will soon stop access to the originals as in their view they have provided alternative access.

The problem is no one in the NA checks the accuracy of Ancestry and FindMyPast records before removing access to the originals.

Thanks for your reply Ken.

Poor transcribing could certainly explain a few of the missing records. But I do wonder if some of the originals have been lost.
I am researching a man who was in the RFC/RAF and his airmans records, which are included in the newly released collection on FindMyPast, clearly state he was given a SWB yet there is no record on either FindMyPast or A. Or does the fact he was in the RAF make a difference? Are those records separate from those awarded to army/navy personnel?

Ah! Just spotted something. I notice on FindMyPast the date range for their SWB collection is 1914-1920, whilst my mans RAF service record states his SWB was issued in 1921. Wonder if that is the reason, not all of the records have been included?

Moira

I only have access to the Ancstry ones.

In the last week or so they have improved the search to include searching a man's number (astonishingly lacking before)

Previously a search was much harder as many on these Rolls are shown as initials only. So a search for a full first chrisitian name might not bring up your man. Also the Regiment/Corps can vary wildly in format.

To see what I mean try a search on 12345 in Regimental number. It'll bring up 13 records showing examples of initials and also shortening of christian names (Wm and Edwd). North Staffs have been mistranscribed as  N S Caffe

With regards to knowing the list reference from other sources. Are you aware that on Ancstry you can drill down to the actual list from the 'Browse this collection' button over on the right. If you know the issuing office that is.
