ST Stephens Church, Tovil, Maidstone - parish records needed
« on: Tuesday 01 July 14 21:03 BST (UK) »
I am in search of the parish records for St Stephens Church in Tovil near Maidstone. I was at the Kent Record office today and unfortunately the records for 1900 onwards were stolen in the 1960's.
The church is no longer standing but the graveyard has a few graves left but looking for anyone with access to the burial  records .

One option you explore is the local newspaper archive also held in the history centre. If the person was buried locally you may find a full obituary posting about a week after the death is recorded. This often gives a list of the mourners present, where the service took place and where they were buried.

Its a long shot but it may be the only option open if the parish records are missing.
Good luck in your research.

From the mid 1800’s the Sutton Road Cemetery became the main burial ground for Maidstone and surrounding area. The old archives in Maidstone held a microfilm copy of those burials covering well into the 1950’s.
You might like to check if those records are still available and if the burials were carried out there instead of St Stephens.
Alternatively the Crematorium Office at Vinters Park administer the Sutton Road Cemetery and may be able to find any records.
