I'm soooooo annoyed at myself. Bells rang in my head about how up to date the info was BUT I said it MUST be legit for it to be online or else a Government Dept. would NOT have put it online.

So, I said SUPER I shall put that research on the back burner 'til I have the time to look at the site properly.

GRRR yesterday I went in and all my suspicions came true and I'm soooo upset that I didn't do my research earlier.

Lesson Learned.

Does anyone know the EXACT law ? I thought the 100 year rule only applied to the Census ! Sure maiden names are on the GRO books up to 1958 - all easily available online for YEARS.

NIGHTMARE to say the least.

In one way I feel sorry for the department who probably thought they were doing it all :(

BTW I've noticed that I can't get into St. Nicholas' Church, Francis Street, Dublin baptism pages - Has anyone else had the same problem ? Is this another site removing access to records ?

Tara

About time they took them down. My goodness the stuff you could find out about someone was unbelievable!!
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

I have to agree with you

(mind you I did have a good look at them while they were up.)
I hope the early ones (1900 - 1927) come back up soon.

I had an uncomfortable discovery with them as well, still I wish they had just put a cut off point in place rather than take the whole thing down.
I did wonder at one point if they were monitoring how often a person signed in, I kept expecting to be denied access because I was searching too much, granted it wasn't recent events.

Initially I wrote on here that I hadn't signed in. I then realised that I had entered the name of the person I was searching for  ::) it made no difference to my search. I then input that name again and did the little captcha exercise and got my results.
I can't see the point of signing in without any registration. You could enter a different, completely fabricated name each time you sign in as far as I can see - unless I am missing something very obvious or doing something wrong.

I did that a few times as well.
I assume they can track your IP at the very least.

Presumably, and when I read it on here, I realised my mistake and have entered my own name since.
A few years ago, I asked the parish priest in my father's birth parish for details of his baptism in 1907.
He agreed happily to provide the information but said that he wouldn't allow anyone to look at the registers themselves due to the 'sensitivity of the information' when relatives of anyone named therein were still living in the area.
