GAUNT and BATTY from "On This Day in NOVEMBER ..... "
« on: Thursday 19 June 14 13:50 BST (UK) »
I too am related to Joseph Gaunt and Sarah Batty from Denby. They would have been my 4x g grandparents.

I still live only 8 miles from Denby and am very familiar with this area.

When you mention that they were married in Penistone it could well be they were married in Denby as there was a chapel in the village prior to the church being built around 1865. All parish records were held in Penistone as the parish church but they are marked in their registers as taking place in Denby.

Hello and welcome to Rootschat.

Joseph Gaunt and Sarah Batty were my 4 x g.grandparents too.  Which of their children are you descended from?  My ancestor was their youngest daughter Ann born 1780.  She married Thomas Hobson on 14 June 1797 at St John the Baptist Church, Penistone.

I haven't done a lot of research as yet but someone gave me a family tree 30 years ago, before modern technology, which shows I am descended from Jonathan Gaunt and his second wife Ann Wainwright. No DOB shown but would be between 1762 and 1766.
Penistone church is very old and dates back to 1500's and I think parish records are available on 'ancestry' from the late 1500's.
I must subscribe again when autumn comes around and I have more time but they are very hard to read.
Although I don't know them personally there are still Hobsons living in Denby Dale.
I've sent load of photos etc from history books of Denby, which I have ,to  Wiggy in Australia including the gravestone of Joseph and Sarah.
We are all descended from Robert Gaunt born 1635.

Welcome to Rootschat Bob - good to have another Gaunt on board!   ;D

I need to catch up with that Robert born 1635 - I seem to have the dates wrong and need some verification - but we need another thread for that I do believe.(*)

Hi Bob

I knew Wiggy and I were distant relatives and we've managed to piece a bit of the family together over time.  All I have about Robert Gaunt is that he was born 1635-1640 in Lower Denby.  I don't know who he married, I know he had 2 sons Joshua born 1660 and Jonathan 1665.

My Hobsons left Denby when Thomas (who married Ann Gaunt)'s son Seth (my g.grandfather) moved to Manchester.  In fact three of his brothers also moved to Manchester, Henry, Arthur and Enos.  Interestingly, their mother also moved to Manchester after the death of her husband in 1876, but she is buried at St John the Baptist Church, Penistone with her husband.  I found their grave on a very wet day a few years ago.  I was just about to give up when, for some unknown reason, I decided to search underneath a bush near a wall, and there was the gravestone.  It was only then that I found that my 2 x g.grandmother was buried in the plot too.

Joseph and Ann (nee Gaunt) had 12 children, so it's not surprising that there are still some Hobsons in Denby Dale.

The old family tree I have was prepared by Stephen who is descended from the other half of the Gaunts. No proof but he does say that Joseph Gaunt's parents were Joseph Gaunt d.1749/Sarah d.1747.
He also says that this Joseph was the grandson of Robert Gaunt from whom the two Gaunt familys of denby are descended. I think I took the date of 1630 from another tree I was linked to a while ago but no proof.
The next descendants could have been Joshua and johnathan, sons of Robert hence the two families

From what I have gathered - from somewhere - possibly Lizzie or you Bob  or June in Canada - another Gaunt descendant (do wish I would record where I find stuff)  - -

I have Joshua 1660-65 - 1730 and Jonathan 1665 - 1725 as sons of Robert.

Joshua married Ann Thicket and they had William, Mary, John Ann and Joseph.

Joseph 1703 - 1749 married Sarah ?Hinscliff  1700 - 1747 and from there we know the tree fairly certainly.   They had Joseph, Jonathan, Judith and Thomas.

(  -   I wonder if descendants of this Thomas also came to Australia - there was a Thomas Gaunt in Melbourne during the mid 1800s who was a jeweller - and there is another Canadian who seem to be related to this family.)

Lizzie and I follow the Joseph eldest son of this family, you follow the Jonathan second son of this family.  then next generation Lizzie goes her way and I go mine.   Think that is about right.

Was this from Stephen's tree, maybe,  Bob?

I too record things without noting the source.

Stephen's tree starts with Joseph/sarah hichliffe? but I have noted joshua/ann thicket as their parents - could have been from June's tree but not sure although i'm certain it would be a link when I subscribed to ancestry. I've also scribbled on the tree that the parents of Robert Gaunt b.1635 were James Gaunt b.1600and Presilla ? b.1600probably from the same source.

I will subscribe to ancestry again in the autumn and search Penistone parish records which are very old and date back to 1600 if not a little earlier. There are other church records which are fairly local ie.Silkstone so could be any of them.

She desends from   a Judith Moatson ? & Jonathan Gaunt, they married in 1685.   In between there are a Joseph Gaunt 1729, Thomas Gaunt 1775, Elizabeth Gaunt 1799,  there is also another Joseph Gaunt but no birth year.
