DDoS isn't a virus nor is it an attempt to hack. I've already had an exchange of emails with Lost Cousin's founder about this 'cos he would insist in the email he sent on Saturday it was down to hacking.
A DDoS involves flooding a website with so much traffic that the website because unavailable because of this. It's not down to a virus, although some of the PCs sending the traffic are likely to be infected with malware which enables the rogue element to use them for doing this. If they were trying to hack the site, they wouldn't advertise their presence by a DDoS. That said, the type of individual who would undertake a DDoS would have no issue probably with hacking.
That said, I suspect it did cause issues with ancestry's systems which is why they are still experiencing problems.
I agree with Plummiegirl re Facebook. I'm sick and tired of reading the stupid comments some people are continuing to post even after various people had pointed out to them what the issue actually was and ancestry had confirmed this. There is one individual on there who even admits she no longer has a subscription but is continuing to have a go at them as she did when she had a subscription.
