Just relaying the message of the Customer Solutions Associate at ancestry  - he called it a "fluke"

Sandra

Probably didn't really know what he was talking about. ;D ;D

Really. That's your opinion  :P

Sandra

Having worked in IT for over 15 years at the infrastructure level (at levels higher than helpdesk), YES.  Just because they work on ancestry's helpdesk does not mean they know what they are talking about and often just repeat what they've been told without thinking the problem through.

It was (according to their tweets) a 'Distributed Denial of Service Attack' (DDOS)

Unfortunately it's incredibly difficult to thwart such an onslaught, so they're been doing incredibly well to keep the public informed and also keep some of the services running (even if it's intermittent or with reduced functionality).

It seems the attackers have turned their attention to Facebook this morning.

Whilst of course such attacks in these instances cause inconvenience and frustration for us,taking a much wider view of these things the potential for disruption to much more vital services is very worrying.
