Surely near all have protective software on own PC?

Last figure I saw Cas (stallc)was that Microsoft reckon its about 24% of PCs worldwide that are unprotected....  unfortunately they are all over the place not just in certain countries so impossible to totally block ::)

I've got FMT and synched two of my trees, but it didn't work that brilliantly, so I gave up with it.... Maybe I should try again?

(although... erm... not right now! ;D)

Accounts are okay as is all our data & trees.  These type of attacks are simply about "taking down" a site they have a some grudge against or, more typically for smaller sites, for attempted extortion from the site's owners.

These attacks are only possible due to the large numbers of PCs in the world without any proper virus software or firewall installed and working  :-\

Pete

Thanks Pete  :)
Best wishes HL

I am not that good with stats. BUT if peeps use the internet regularly, they MUST know to protect themselves/their internet access. We are in 2014. It cannot have gone down in the minority that maybe has no internet protection surely?

This incident with ancestry shows us how vulnerable we are in internet world. It appears we are lucky this time that we have not had any of our personal data and trees stolen, lost or corrupted.

I think many people may have learnt a lesson here...keep back ups folks!! Whilst preaching to the converted amongst many old school researchers. I still think (Judging by the number of people worried about their online trees) there are many still out there who rely totally on their online trees as their main storage facility.

Whilst I consider myself reasonably competent with the online world I still think sometimes there is method in the "old style" approach to keeping hard copies of everything or at least your important things.

I attended a talk at my local family history society last year and whilst the talk was interesting it was what the speaker said at the end that stuck in my memory. He held up an 8" Floppy Disk and said "I cant read this anymore because I had to use this instead" and held up a 3.5" HD Diskette and then said "I cant read this anymore because I had to use this instead" and held up a CD. He then went on to hold up a USB Pen Drive and spoke of Cloud storage systems and said "one day I wont be able to read these either". He then held up a 300 year old manuscript and said "I can read this though!"  ;D

You'd be surprised about how many people even in this country still don't bother much with security software on their PCs, or rely on basic free software which isn't always the best protection against eveything.

Some unfortunately use software that purports to fix problems with their PCs, when in fact it installs some malware that causes these issues. :-\

Then there is the issue of people clicking on links in spam emails ...

Most DDoS attacks will be caused by what they refer to as botnet PCs, those infected with some form of malware which enables others to make use of their internet connections to launch such attacks or send out spam.

Ah the wonders of the net!I've been unable to gain access with Google Chrome and IE.However I tried with Firefox and in first time!

Regards
William Russell Jones.

Got excited when I read you had found a way thru William - however, it didn't work for me - the connection timed out - The server at secure.ancestry.co.uk is taking too long to respond.

That may well be the case, but we do not live in a paperwork era/society anymore...so it will not work today as yesterday...my opinion only
