PS probably the only one happy about this will be some dysfunctional outcast sitting in his week old underpants in front of a PC in his mum's house basement....  ::)

Probably related to some of us on here  :) :)

What a sad thought, hopefully not  >:(

Seems they are on it, should be ok for all hopefully soon  :-\

Regards Cas

My FTM isn't working properly either. It takes ages to connect and open and then I just get a not responding message when I try to open a tree. At the top it says "log in" and if I click on that it says I must be coneced to the internet, but I am already connected. Hopefully they will get that sorted soon.

Hampshire Lass when you connect to website you go to a specific address and the "front end" is the part at which the message from your PC requests a connection and the website acknowledges, says hello and lets you in and establishes the connection.  These attacks try to swamp that by having thousands of hijacked PCs (their owners don't even know it) making thousands of repeated attempts to connect to the website.  Its a bit like a shop assistant being overwhelmed by thousands of customers all vying for his attention but its impossible to tell who are real customers and who are fake ones.

Treetotal & groom I wouldn't even attempt to use FTM connected up until this is all sorted.  To use FTM disconnect from the internet before actually starting up FTM, so I doesn't try and connect/synch on startup. Then once you are in go to the "Tools" menu then "Options" and in the "General" tab knock off "automatically check for program updates when connected to internet" and "search online automatically when connected to internet". You can then reconnect your PC/laptop to internet and carry on working in FTM with it standalone. It may be worth disconnecting from internet also when you exit FTM to avoid it trying to connect then but mine seems to just exit okay (I can get in to Ancestry site okay at moment but connecting FTM isn't working for me). You won't be able to synch of course but it should make FTM usable.

It looks like ancestry have taken a big hit with this cyber attack :(

Reading messages on here and other sites it appears that anyone who was logged in at the time when everything went pear shaped can now access the ancestry website, although not at full function. I was logged on and seemed to get on, then I read ancestry's comments on their facebook page telling you to clear your cookies and cache for the ancestry website and log in again. As a complete idiot I followed their instructions and guess what? I cant get on it anymore!  :'(

On the FTM problem I un-ticked the boxes the same as you did and it seems to be working better in "stand alone" mode. I just need to remember to re-tick the boxes once everything is up and running again ;)
