1841 - KEMP Brighton Please

Following on from the Kemp search in Lewes I received the following email from Sue today.....could some one please have a look for her.

"Just had a thought as to why James and Ann Kemp are not showing up in Lewes in 1841.
 
Here is what I found in the book for 1851
 
Kemp Albert son U 2 born Lewes
Kemp Ann wife M 36 born Lewes
Kemp James M 42 born Lewes (whitesmith)
Kemp James son U 10 born Lewes (scholar)
Kemp Jane dr 8 born Brighton (scholar)
Kemp Thomas son U 7 born Arundel (scholar)
 
James and Ann's daughter Jane....if she was 8 in 1851 must have been born in Brighton around 1843 so maybe James and Ann were in Brighton in 1841 and this is why they can't be found in Lewes. What do you think... do you dare to ask for another lookup, this time in Brighton?"

               have had a look through the 1841 Brighton Census, there are 19 Kemps but not yours.There are pages that are unreadable.Also had a look Arundel not there either, sorry.Perhaps they were visiting inlaws.

I think you may have a similar problem that I had with Lewes. My gg grandparents live in a village outside Lewes, but the birth details of the children were often shown as Lewes.

Try some of the nearby villages (Barcombe, Ringmer, Cooksbridge, Kingston etc), or even Cliffe (it is today Lewes, but was very much independent until the 1880s).

Hi Rod, It's a good thought and I'll pass it on to my mother in law who is doing this research.  We actually live in Crowborough which is the very close to Lewes so perhaps we should get in the car and do some searching without the aid of the PC!!

looked up a book I have on Lewes (Town book of Lewes 1702 to 1837, Sussex Record Society).

You might like to try searching under "Kempe" as well, as it seems that this is a spelling variation. This might solve the problem, but might just muddy the waters.

I also found a Kemp living at Coneybrough in 1800, which is just north of Lewes near Hamsey.

KEMPE is a very old long standing name in the parish of South Malling, Lewes.

It goes back to 1656 and earlier as the following examples of monuments shows
