Merlin - what index is this for Viv's birth, is it Victoria -  or where is OGS - or does it stand for stand for something?
Perhaps Merlin will have more to offer on the meaning of OGS,
Merlin will probably know what/where OGS represents. :)

OGS is an abbreviation for Office of the Government Statist.

The 1914-1920 index also shows other abbreviations on some birth registrations:
O G S (with spaces), GOVT STATIST & STATISTS OFFICE.

It may be interesting to know the month of the year 1917 for Vivienne's birth.
It must have been difficult for George to leave his wife expecting a baby and it had been a long gap between babies too, I see.
I'm like you - would like to know the date of Vivienne's birth - she may not have even been born when he was killed.

Vivienne was born before 5 Sep 1917 as that is the date on the Pension Statement that appears in his NAA file.

Given that the OGS was involved, my guess would be that her birth registration was probably late. Some of the others on the index appear to be late registrations &/or alterations that require approval from the OGS.

Well,  :o :o :o

As usual when I post on the Aussie board - oodles of lovely information  :D :D :D

Thank you everyone - your time and effort is very much appreciated :)
I havent a clue when Vivienne was born - Like Merlin says the records for his pension state "2 children" in Sept 1917. Merlin's registration ref: states 1917  and Unfortunately her funeral notice doesnt give an age. There are tree's on GR and other sites which have her born anywhere between 1904 and 1918 :)
and you're right - I found it a bit weird that his wife and two children weren't on the Killed in action notice.

Thanks once again
Cheers
Jan ;D

A most interesting thread.

From Merlin I have learnt about the Office of the Government Statist, a body whose roll in BDMs I had never been aware of before.

;D Learnt a bit about the  Good Sisters too, though irrelevant as it turns out ;D

Always good to hear from you, Jan

Thanks, Merlin.  I've learnt something as well.

Am I right then, in thinking that it's possible that Vivienne's birth may have been well before the date of registration?

Good to hear from you too Sue ( ;) ) and Cando - cant believe it's 9 years since my first post  :o

I learn loads off all of you, every time I post a request :) I must update another post about my grandfather-in-law - some of you may remember about the rogue who "went on holiday" on VJ Day 1945 and never returned - all you lovely people found he had died in Adelaide. ;)

I am now looking at George Thomas Blore's younger siblings all  born in Victoria, all children of George Blore and Carrie Crowle  (Sarah Jane caroline to giver her the full title)- :

William John Blore b 1882 Coralie Jessie 1883, Nellie Louisa 1886, Percy Norman 1887, Alfred Houghton 1888, Harry Scholes 1889.   I have gathered sufficient info on George's older siblings Mary Caroline, Lydia janet, Edith Ellen and Ethel Barbara.

In case any of you are wondering (I know lots of you know me already) The family I am researching are all descendants of LYDIA TIVEY and John HOUGHTON, Mary Houghton, their daughter b 1821 Melbourne, Derbyshire, married Thomas BLORE, a tailor in 1845, he was found guilty of 4 accounts of fraud and sentenced to 7 years deportation in 1848. (finally deported to Tasmania in 1850) Mary, his wife and George (their son b 1846 Derby) joined him in 1858. I found two other children born -Tasmania Alfred and Lydia Mary. I have lots of info on Alfred and his offspring - apart from his birth registration which was c1859 (acc to death). Lydia Mary died a spinster.  If any of you are bored and want to help then please feel free to add information or links - all help appreciated as always :)

Cheers

Gippsland Farmers Journal 29 Jan 1918

The Supreme Sacrifice. Old residents of Traralgon will  remember Mr Geo. Blore, who conducted the "Eazywalkin" boot shop nearly 30 years ago, and previously had charge of the old Hey field flour mill.

"The Argus" of Friday last contains the obituary notice of his son George, who has made the supreme sacrifice in France. As a boy the late soldier attended the Methodist Sunday- school, and also the State school. In after years he joined the Public Service, and won a good position with the Closer Settlement Board. He answered the Empire's call, and though the Board advised him to enlist for home service, he preferred to go abroad. He subsequently made an improvement to the artillery, which was submitted to the Imperial authorities.

This brave soldier leaves a young wife and two children.
