Thanks for all your posts.  I think, looking at the paperwork I have, that Wilhelmina was admitted from the workhouse in 1885 to the industrial school.   Is the religious creed register for a workhouse? Regards

Found  this  whilst  googling the net  :

It's a register kept by workhouse masters to record info about inmates including their religious creed. As adoption wasn't a legal formality until the 1920s I guess the creed register might record who a child was boarded out to, which was a sort of forerunner to adoption.

So by the looks of it then Wilhelmena was staying with May Powell at 6 Boneded St (?) until she went into the workhouse.

Hi
I got this reply today from Liverpool Central Library:-

"I think the name is May (or possibly Mary) Powell of 6 Benedict Street, Stanley Road. This street is not  listed in the 1881 census index but it is there on the 1891 census and there is a Powell family (headed by Peter Powell) at no 33 Benedict Street but no Mary (May) in the household. It was in Bootle just to the north of Liverpool"

So Benedict Street was built after 1881, so once again were was Wilhelmina?
