Problem FTM second marriage name
« on: Saturday 07 June 14 07:53 BST (UK) »
Hi
And thank you for letting me join your forum .

I am using Family Tree Maker 2012 and the problem I have is that when I have a Female that is married again I am not able to give 2 surnames  in her 1st and 2nd marriage ,ie Joan Smith married Mr jones so she becomes Joan Jones and they had 1 child   , then Joan jones gets married to a Mr Binns so she becomes Joan Binns and they had 1 child , but I am not able to put 2 different names for her 1st and 2nd marriages !! .

cheers

First you set up Joan as a female using her maiden name. Then you set up husband 1 and add a marriage event to this couple. You connect up child 1 with these two as parents. You then set up husband 2 and create a marriage event between him and Joan. Child 2 can then be connected to this couple. Joanīs record in FTM will always show her maiden name. Each child will show its fatherīs surname. You can choose which of the two marriages you want to show as the most relevant to your own research, but can easily switch between the two.

Hi
 Thanks for your reply .

Yes I have done that , but has you have said Joan will still show her maiden name when I switch to her 2nd husband , but that is not her name then,  between her and her second husband she will have the surname from her first marriage ! .

The standards in Family History are to ALWAYS show females by their maiden name!

Hi

Is your problem with not showing her first married name that you don't find her when looking in the index? If so, I find that when I'm trying to find a female I change the index order to show the first names first. I can then usually run through the people with the correct first name and select the correct one. This is something that I really find useful and you can't do on Ancestry itself.
