Guernsey Births
« on: Thursday 05 June 14 04:01 BST (UK) »
Helping my sister-in-law track down her gggrandma Susannah EASON.b.c. 1830 Guernsey
In 1841 in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales & FP with Wm. MARTIN bc 1816, his wife Mary b.c. 1795 - 1806 Donegal, Ireland & their 2 dtrs. [b. Cornwall] + Anne EASON b.c. 1821 Ireland & James EASON b.c. 1832 FP [also Guernsey].
Family moved to Penzance, Cornwall where Susannah m. 1850 John HOSKING.
Theory: Mary MARTIN much older than Wm. so was she previously mar. to Mr. EASON in Ireland , had Anne there, then moved to Cornwall or Guernsey & had Susannah & James? [can't find m. or b/ch in Ireland].
In 1851 James is recorded as Wm's son-in-law but was unm. so was he really his stepson?

Need anything earlier than 1841 please. Any help appreciated.  Peggy in SA

Thanks very much Trish. With Mary MARTIN as a witness it certainly seems to indicate this is
Susannah's sister, so now I have their father. His occupation of soldier may explain the varying locations for the childrens' births.
I didn't want to go to the expense of another certificate [Susannah's marriage in 1850] so this has helped a lot.

Hi Peggy,
I suggest you do a look-up on the Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark Board to see if someone has access to Baptisms to see if there is one for James Eason c 1832 and a Marriage for William Martin to Mary Eason c 1834/6.

You never know what the info may contain if someone has them.

Trish :)

You could also look at The Island Wiki? (http://www.theislandwiki.org/index.php/Main_Page)

And in particular, the Donkipedia pages (http://www.theislandwiki.org/index.php/Family_History_in_Guernsey)
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Tried Donkeypedia without success, but that led me to a Guernsey family history facebook page so maybe someone there can help.
Thank you for your suggestions.

I think this is the one, although I have yet to prove the connection.  From the marriage record of Eliza [presumed sister of Susannah], father Jethro was a soldier so this is a positive identifier.
I've found a whole family of EASONs in Merriott, Somerset [not Merioneth as in the National Archives record]. Jethro was bap.6.3.1791, 3rd of 7 children of Jethro EASON [snr] and Susannah MITCHELL.
If I could just find the marriage between Jethro EASON and Mary ...?.. [later MARTIN] that would be a clincher. Mary was from Donegal, Ireland so it may well have happened there, especially as the eldest 2 daughters {Ann abt. 1821 & Eliza abt. 1824]were born in Ireland, then Susannah & James were born in Guernsey several years later.  I'll have to try to find the postings of the regiment in which Jethro served. Thank you for your help - much appreciated.     Peggy

I had come to the same conclusion that Jethro was likely the Somerset one but was waiting for your reply. Well done KG for finding him in the National Archives.

The Birth Cert of Ann/Anne Martin will hopefully give you Marys maiden name :)
