Harrison from Ballintoy 18th century
« on: Saturday 31 May 14 19:26 BST (UK) »
Hello, I am researching two brothers, James and Charles Harrison from County Antrim, immigrated to the USA circa 1767, Loyalists and removed to New Brunswick, Canada following the end of the War. Am trying to locate their parish of birth and their parents. On the PRONI databases, I was able to find a James Harrison in the 1766 census in Ballintoy. In the Church records available at PRONI, I read that the early registers were destroyed in Dublin, but the vestry minutes back to 1713 have survived. Would those minutes contain names of parishioners, families etc... in order word, information that would be of genealogical value? Thank you

Danny

Danny,

The vestry minutes generally contain details of church finances, payments to the poor, appointment of new members of the select vestry, and minutes of their meetings. However you do also find odd baptisms and information on individual parishioners, so I wouldn’t rule them out as a source.

Vestry records relate to the Church of Ireland (ie Episcopalian church). Does that fit with your knowledge of the family denomination?

Hi

Thanks for both your replies.

Yes my information is that they were Protestants so will now find a way to view that reel in PRONI. If anyone attends PRONI I would be interested for a lookup of that reel.

Correct, that is the James and Charles Harrison I am researching. Still trying to ascertain their origins.

Danny

Hello

Thanks for your reply. PRONI has been contacted and they won't do searches in a microfilm. I don't blame them, it would be so time consuming if they would start doing this for us. I have researched the Harrisons extensively here in Canada and in New Jersey, so now am aiming at that microfilm at PRONI.

When PRONI do agree to do research they charge something like £15 per 15 minutes, so it can be an expensive way of doing it. You probably need a researcher. Or perhaps LDS have a copy of the film in their catalogue.

Hi, thanks for your reply. Correct, PRONI are asking for 15.50 pounds for 15 minutes so that is too expensive for me. The FHL does not have that reel unfortunately.
