Mercantile Marine, S.S. 'Rona': Capatain Albert Edgar Moses
« on: Friday 30 May 14 18:28 BST (UK) »
I was hoping someone can assist with locating records for Capatain Albert Edgar Moses, who died 25 November 1918 and is buried at Port Said War Memorial.

I have hit a dead end in trying to locate his service record or any record of his time with the Mercantile Marines. However the only record I have found is on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Any assistance would be hugely appreciated.
Thank you!

There are lots of people on here who are far more knowledgeable about this subject than I am...

However, I do remember reading on another Site that the majority of WW1 service records for men in the Merchant Marine were destroyed in the late 60s:-(

Let's hope that someone else will be able to help in more detail.

Romilly.

He did not die from war causes. The only vessel named RONA lost from war causes in WW1 was sunk in 1916. His death was recorded in GRO CONSULAR DEATH INDICES volume 14, page 375 born 1863
The easiest way to find his details would be via his masters certificate of service. The only A E Moses I can find  (not necessarily your man )was born in Southampton in 1863. Problem is he has a certificate from Hong Kong Certificate 507. awarded in 1890. These colonial certificates are for Competency but do not record service.
So the only way is to back track via crew agreements. Problem is where do you start!
There are at least 10 vessels with the name RONA who may be contenders. You need to establish which vessel your man was aboard and more importantly her official number. Needle in a haystack.
