Help with 1861 Census Re:Thomas Nock Visitor:

When searching the 1861 Census The Family  that evening were the Robinson Family

The address Walkers Yard Snow Hill Wolverhampton:

John Robinson born C 1824 age 37. Occupation Groom Born Durham County
Wife Martha (Nock)  C 1833  age 28 Occupation Tailoress. B Birmingham Warwickshire

Children :Henry1853:  Charles 1865:   Maria   1855:  James 1858:  John  1861: Harriet 1862:
Charlotte  1864:All born Wolverhampton.

The visitor to the house is Thomas Nock age 12 years Occupation Plater Born Wolverhampton,
the abbreviation that  refers to Thomas shows S.LAW!.. too young to be the son in law to Martha and John.

I do believe there is a connection to the Robinson and Nock families unable to sort this one out Looked all over.Hoping someone might recognise the family names. Do you have access to 1861 Census? Perhaps I read the abbreviation all  wrong.

Son in law was sometimes used to mean a stepson of the head of the household ie Martha's illigitimate son

When I was checking Thomas Nock, nothing made sense:unable to match him up with anyone.

If you look at the 1851 census Thomas is living with Martha and her parents

Castle Yard, Dudley Street, Wolverhampton

Richard Nock 76 head b Bridgnorth Shropshire Tailor Journeyman
Maria Nock 52 wife b South Wales
Martha Nock 20 dau b Birmingham assistant tailoress
Thomas Nock 3 so b Wolverhampton (should be grandson)

The original census from clearly shows Son in Law! No abbreviation

Just shows why you should always try to look at original documents, rather than transcriptions?!

Your help has been invaluable, it all makes sense , you have found ancestors I have been looking for for such a long time.e.g. The Robinsons:Nock connection.

You are correct KGarrad, re looking at the original census,not the transcript I too have found many errors.
This query is one of the last and my subscription regarding access to the  census had run out.luckily I found the 1861 census via FreeCEN;  Interesting Castle Yard exists Happy to hear something does ....will check that out soon.........happy, happy.

Castle Yard runs off Dudley Street unfortunately its just a passage between buildings these days the one end of it was demolished on Market Street and new buildings put there in around the 1920's but its nice to know the name still exists

If you look up Dudley Street on Google maps it runs between there and Market Street

Often wondered about the Castle it refers to though as there is also a Castle Street opposite - maybe it was a pub

Walkers Yard has been mentioned a couple of times in my research re the Census, long gone like so much in Dear Wolverhampton:
