Hi guys,
Just after some advice/help with my 2nd great grandfather. He was born Abraham Bines in 1866 in Cardiff. He married a Mary Rees in 1890 & had 3 children - Elizabeth, William & Sarah (My great grandmother). Mary passed away in 1908 & he married a Rachel Donovan in 1917 & was stepfather to John Donovan. Whilst I've been looking into his past, I found out he served time in the military under the 1st Batallion Royal Welsh (regimental number 7561, in the second Boer War)
Whilst reading over his enlistment I noticed that next to the question "Have you ever been sentenced to imprisonment by the Civil Power?" The initial answer was "Yes once for" but then scribbled it out and replaced with "No"
Now I'm curious as to whether he was sentenced & what this crime was for? I've tried searching around the Ancestry site for answers but found nothing. I've also noticed that Abraham couldn't read or write, as he put his mark on the document instead of signing - so could it be possible he got into trouble but was never actually imprisoned?
