Andrew White Tombstone, Abbotshall Parish
« on: Sunday 25 May 14 13:55 BST (UK) »
I have been lucky enough to find my GGG grandfather's tombstone at Abbotshall Parish, Fife, Kirkcaldy, Scotland.  Now what?  How do I continue back?  His father was Thomas White.  I thought they originally spelled their name Whyte.  I feel like I'm at a crossroads.

Hi Mary Scott,

You are probably correct about the spelling Whyte & White it depends on the person recording it. That is why we always try the alternatives when we get stuck.    eg. McDonald/Macdonald

However,  Andrew,s son Thomas must have had considerable means to afford the tombstone, therefore I am assuming ( yes I know it's against the rules in genealogy searches  ???)that  he would have learned to read and therefore know the current correct  spelling. Just an idea.

hi mary scott,
ref your pm,   Patience is the answer as with any common name.

Parish records are a good source of info, perhaps other rootschatters could point you in the right direction as I am not sure about Scottish resources.
