Great Grandfather -Charles Edward King
« on: Saturday 24 May 14 14:25 BST (UK) »
Hi guys,
I've posted asking for help with my great grandfather before and you guys were amazing and helping me find out more about him & he is still causing me trouble.

His name was Charles Edward King, born in 1875 in Bath, according to Census records. He married twice, once to a Violet King (maiden name unknown) who died in 1915 & then again to a Rosanna Lewis (she was a widow, née Roper) in 1918 in Merthyr Tydfil. I've bought the marriage certificate for them which arrived this morning, and listed Charles' father as being named Thomas King who was deceased in 1918, but now I'm having trouble in finding out any more info about this branch of the tree, which is frustrating since I have the same surname.

I've been searching Census records for 1881 & 1891 based of this but I'm struggling since I'm unsure as to when Thomas died, who he was married to & whether there were any other children. I've tried searching for Birth records to try and find a birth certificate, so I can at least find out his Mother's name, but it's coming up a blank. I've not had any trouble like this with any other branches of the tree, especially this close to the bottom so any advice from you guys would be much appreciated.

Also any tips or guidance as to where I'm going wrong when conducting searches would also be appreciated.

Hi,

On the marriage certificate to Rosanna Lewis, Thomas King is listed as deceased in 1918 and his occupation was that of an Ostler. I will look into the records you've found to see what I can find that matches up.
 Thank you :)

Does the ancestry site allow to search by Census references? If so, how?

Hi again, yes it does, go to the census you require, then scroll down and you will see Piece/Folio/Page fill in with the numbers after the RG ref or HO ref ( 1841/51) she is on the 1901 Wales census as Violet PESCY b 1876 Kent
Maybe someone can explain how you get the name/location etc straightway, as it seems now to give more results "out of area" you require?

EDIT just realised my site incorporates both England/Wales in replies, so do not enter the above census ref on Ancestry England census!

I've just been able to find a record for a Charles King born in 1874 in Somerset which is where I think he actually was born - so I think I'm going to look at getting a copy of that birth certificate.
Annoyingly he isn't registered as Charles Edward.

Is there anything I'd be able to do to verify it's the correct certificate before I purchase it? Or would it be a case of buy the certificate and hope it lists Thomas as the father?
