« on: Saturday 24 May 14 07:21 BST (UK) »
Have just seen the message :

Attention -As of July 31 2014 the online functionality (including web search) in Family Tree Maker versions 16 and prior will no longer be available. Other functionality, such as tree building, chart and report genration etc. will remain active. To upgrade to thelatest version of Family Tree Maker click here. for more information, please feel free to contact us.

So will we carry on as before but without this function .... or go for the upgrade?

I believe that version 16 and prior refers to the very early versions of FTM. If you have a year then it is more recent. I recently purchased 2014 for several reasons. One is that I can buy it quite cheaply now. It comes with 3 months free access to Ancestry (this can be added on if you are a current subscriber) and you are now able to synch FTM with your Ancestry tree if that is what you wish to do. Just a word of warning to anyone who has a massive tree on Ancestry with loads of media attached, it does take a long time to synch your trees and download the media. My sister likes to add loads of people to her tree and has about 8500 people and it took most of the day to download completely. We had understood from looking at the info in advance that we would be able to choose not to download all of  the media. When we realised what was happening and phoned the help desk, we were told that you have no choice, you have to have all the media if you wish to synch your trees.
I haven't actually activated mine yet, I will choose a time later in the year when I can make most use of my three months free membership.

Hope this helps

Sheila

Reassuring to know I should be OK for a while yet, thanks, Sheila.
