Accessing passenger lists to victoria, Australia

Hi, I'm looking for advice about accessing immigration records.

I am researching my Moore ancestors know that they originate from Country Tyrone but don't know the actual town, which limits my ability to locate ancestors in Ireland.

My ancestor Thomas Moore (born 1838, country Tyrone) migrated age 19 to Australia aboard the 'Essex' arriving 25-7-1857. I can find that the public record office of Victoria -  filche 128 page 004. But being located in Scotland I can't physically go to look at the passenger list. Is this record on Ancestry (I don't have a subscription) and if so does it show more information other than I have above (i.e. is it worth taking a subscription to check). Specifically I am trying to locate the town the family came from to see if I can find his parents (Thomas Moore and Jane Bell).

Hi

The images of the passenger lists are not online (Ancestry only has indexes the same as PROV) They are accessable on film or fiche at a few places in Victoria.

If he married in Victoria then his marriage certificate should have his place of birth. The link below is to certificate information for the various Australian States.

Thanks Andy,

I have had success in the last 24hrs. I already had Thomas's marriage certificate and it just listed county tyrone. Last night I got a marriage certificate for Thomas's brother Alexander and he listed the birth place as Ardstraw, County Tyrone - am very happy as have been blocked on this ancestor not having a more precise location. Now off to see what I can find now I know Ardstraw is the place to look.

Those PROV records are not on-line but I'm going the the Australian National Library tomorrow so will have a look at the records for your Thomas MOORE. 

He is listed the Assisted Passage section, as well as the Unassisted Passenger list, which is the reference you already have.

The unassisted lists often record little more than the person's name and age but assisted lists usually have more information.

Just as an aside the Essex departed for London in the September carrying gold.
Export entries were passed at the Customs to-day on 80,570 ounces of gold for shipment—30,738 ounces being for London by the Essex, and the remainder for colonial ports. The Essex cleared out with a total of 105,235 ounces, nearly the whole of which was shipped by the banks This is the largest shipment in one bottom for the year.
Not sure what a 'bottom' was but that's what the paper says

that would be great Judith if you are going to be there to take a look at the record for Thomas. If you ever need anything looked at in Edinburgh let me know.

I spent last night looking through the webpage you linked in ballydw, lots of good information but nothing I could immediately link with my Moore family - But I see it is getting updated all the time so will keep checking

Moore, Thomas, 19, agricultural labourer, Duncan McQarry of East Brighton,
Date of agreement:29 July, to be paid 32pounds per annum, paid weekly

There is no record of his origins.

thanks Judith, good to be able to rule that record out as a source of location. Interesting about now knowing that he worked for Duncan McQarry before he became a farmer on his own farm. Thanks again for looking the record up for me.
