My father was in the British Merchant Navy from approx. 1918- 1938. I have his CR1 and CR2. I know from them the ships number , name and the voyage dates. What I would like to do is find the destinations of his voyages.I have found one voyage on the highland Patriot on 23.12.1933 which I think he was on . It was a passenger ship, but I can't find a crew list to verify this. Could you help me find the destinations of his other voyages??

Welcome Anne,

Crew agreements for the time period you are interested in will in the main be held with the Maritime History Archive in Canada. If you put the ship's official number into the search box at this link: http://www.mun.ca/mha/holdings/searchcombinedcrews.php it should tell you whether they hold a surviving crew agreement for the ship.

The date shown on the CR1 and 2 will be dates of engagement on the ship i.e. date of joining only, not full  service on that ship.

Hello Anne,

Before the war, most of the National Newspapers carried details of shipping such as arrivals, departures and destinations.

If you have access to the Times archive at your local library, you should be able to find out the information you are looking for.

Thanks to both Hugh and Leighton. I have already checked the Canadian Archives through another website, with no luck. However Hugh I will check out your suggested link. I live in Sydney Australia and will check with the local library re the British Newspapers.

Depending on how deep you wish to take your research a much simpler and cheaper way to search on line is to view the vessels passenger list index. Search via ships official number or name. Example for HIGHLAND PATRIOT 1933

Of course this only applies if the vessel was carrying passengers. If not follow HMacs advice.
