a very nasty way to go for all those around the patient -- basically the infection could eat into a major artery in your lungs and you'd suddenly bleed to death; there would be a very large amount of blood coughed up in the space of a few minutes..

Thanks all for the info, this was my 27 year old cousin who was in the Royal Pioneer Corps  :-[
